Willow Wood Nursery: Time to Rest Basket
Our early childhood classrooms are homelike, with a consistent daily rhythm, that promotes health, security and trust. AWS encourages families to develop a daily rhythm at home that include rest time. Willow Wood Nursery's Time to Rest basket aims to make rest time a calm and pleasant experience for both the child and the parent.
Ash Grove & Lilac Kindergartens: Imaginative Play
Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf education, emphasized the importance of the imagination in childhood, and Waldorf educators believe that imaginative play is the key to creative thinking later in life. In a Waldorf early childhood classroom, ample time is allowed each day for joyful, unstructured, and imaginative play.
Grade 1: Are We There Yet?
First grade at AWS includes a pictorial introduction to the alphabet and the four math processes. Students engage in activities that provide the literacy skills necessary for the transition into reading. Mathematics is supported experientially through rhythmic and physical activities, lively counting and sequencing work, as well as through movement in eurythmy.
Grade 2: Book Nook
Through oral storytelling and the act of turning stories into writing, students work with daily practice on their developing language skills. An emphasis on language arts, form drawing and nature stories prepares 2nd graders for writing and reading. The 2nd Grade's Book Nook will provide a child with a cozy place to help build a positive relationship with books and nurture a love of reading.
Grade 3: How Does Your Garden Grow?
The Grade 3 curriculum provides opportunities for practical work and the study of farming, gardening, food preparation, house building, and clothing. Experiences may include baking, maple syrup making and a week-long visit to a working farm. The 3rd Grade's Gardening baskets are filled to the brim with gardening activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Grade 4: NY "State-cation"
Fourth-graders continue their exploration of the world around them through the study of local geography. They learn how to find the four points of the compass by observing the sun and stars. They study and make maps of their classroom, the school, the neighborhood, the city, and the state of New York. The Grade 4's New York State Travel basket will help support your adventures within our state.
Grade 5: "O-live" the Mediterranean
Fifth Grade is the year for study of ancient cultures. The students listen attentively to stories about ancient India, Persia, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. Children hear stories from the Iliad and Odyssey, learn a bit of ancient Greek, and participate in an Olympic Game-style Pentathlon with students from other Waldorf schools. Enjoy the 5th Grade's "O-live" the Mediterranean basket inspired by the studies of that area of the world.
Grade 6: A Night Under the Stars
Geology, astronomy and physics are introduced into the curriculum for the first time in sixth grade. The students’ increasing awareness of their physical bodies makes it the right time to study the physical “body” of the earth in geology. After their attention has been drawn down deep into the earth, it is lifted to the heavens in astronomy. Enjoy and explore astronomy with the 6th Grade's Night Under the Stars basket.
Grade 7: Fit for Life
In Grades 7 & 8, the athletics/movement program is accelerated and expanded to include Life Sports and Team Sports. The students experience dance; orienteering; swimming and diving; cross country skiing; advanced gymnastics; volleyball; tennis; and wrestling. Our primary goals are to enhance current fitness, prepare graduates for a high school team sport, and introduce a wide range of activities.
Grade 8: "It was a Dark and Stormy Night…"
In the Grade 8 English curriculum, the focus is on a thorough review of basic grammar, expanding vocabulary with spelling and definitions, improving writing skills and techniques, paragraph structure and purpose, and gaining an understanding of different literary styles. The 8th Grade's "It was a Dark and Stormy Night..." basket will be treasured by the writer in each of us.
